Martin Murphy is the owner and maintains this web site.  The purpose is to provide Christians with manuscripts, essays, and teaching notes.  The ultimate purpose is to glorify God!

“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” (Psalm 90:12).

If I pray this prayer with any sense of integrity, then I am asking God to teach me to understand the brevity of life.  I’ve devoted twenty five years inquiring into theology, philosophy, literature, the development of Western civilization, and political theory.  Since I believe the word of God, I believe a wise reckoning of time is necessary to allow opportunities to develop from the knowledge that God has given me. I remember Dr. John Gerstner telling me once, “when it comes time for a man to die, he ought not have anything else to do but die.”  I took that to mean that a person ought to complete his or her godly objectives in life, then go to be with the Lord forever. Procrastination is not an option for Christians.

If the Lord gives me health, strength, and a sound mind I plan to publish ten to twelve books over the next couple of years that will be brief commentaries from various books of the Bible, such as Judges, Luke, some sections of the book of Psalms, and several of the New Testament books.  During that time I intend to work on completing my sequel to “The god of the Church Growth Movement.”  The working title to that book is “The God of Church Growth.”  It will consist of an analysis of church growth based on the book of Acts.

We live in a world of indefiniteness.  I am not a linguist, sociologist, or scientist.  My field of study and inquiry is theology and philosophy.  All Christians should desire to know the mind of God, which is the goal of theology.  Then of course philosophy is a friend of wisdom.  Therefore every Christian is a theologian and a philosopher. This web site contains a few of my thoughts on a variety of subjects relative to theology and philosophy.

     The answers to the serious questions in life are not found in the Sunday morning newspaper.  The truth about Jesus Christ is the beginning point of inquiry into these serious questions.  How did I get here?  Why am I here?  Where am I going?  Questions that relate to past, present, and future existence will always capture the attention of men and women and the only satisfaction comes with assurance of eternal life.

      At a time in world history when the church has adopted a consumer oriented, self love, success focus, and is entertainment centered, we at Rational Christian Thoughts desire to remain true to the first words Jesus spoke to his disciples:  "Follow Me."  There is a time and a place for entertainment and seminars, but not when God's people assemble to worship the Creator.

      We are distinctively committed to the Bible and the doctrines of the Bible.  We live in the day of specialization and at Rational Christian Thoughts we specialize in being biblical.

      We acknowledge that human beings come into this world with a guilty and corrupt nature because of the sin of Adam.  God, out of His good pleasure, from all eternity, saves some to everlasting life.  The Lord Jesus Christ, God's eternal Son, became man and offered Himself as a sacrifice to satisfy divine justice.  Jesus Christ is the only Redeemer of God's elect.  The Holy Spirit created in us both faith and repentance so we can receive and rest upon Christ alone for salvation and turn from our sin unto God.

The god of the Church Growth Movement

$ 8.00 USD

Martin Murphy provides a timely diagnosis of the church growth movement in this new book.  While church growth experts boast of expanding their congregations, the ‘The god of the Church Growth Movement’ sounds an alarm that Christians should notice.  This is a well researched and documented analysis of the church growth movement.

The argument set forth is that although modernity has shaped the character of the evangelical church, the church growth movement is the driving force to implement the tools of modernity in the evangelical church.

The author has 20 years experience as pastor and teacher. Early in his ministry he was instrumental in starting new churches and served on a denominational board that was responsible for planting churches. He has a B.A. in Bible from Columbia International University and Master of Divinity from Reformed Theological Seminary.

Theological Terms in Layman Language

$ 9.95 USD

Martin Murphy wrote this book for Christians who are interested in theological concepts and ideas used in sermons, Bible studies, lectures, and books.  It is designed so that simple words like faith or not so simple words like aseity are explained in plain language.  There are over 475 terms explained on 140 pages.  It is a great resource to have for Bible study or sermon preparation.

Return to the Lord

$ 8.95 USD

The title of Martin Murphy's most recent book is “Return to the Lord.”  The title is also the theme and emphasis in this brief commentary of Hosea.  “O Israel, return to the Lord your God, For you have stumbled because of your iniquity; Take words with you and return to the Lord” (Hosea 14:1).  This book traces the historical events and spiritual condition of Israel prior to the fall of the northern kingdom in 722 B.C.  The Old Testament congregation turned away from the true God and committed spiritual adultery by worshipping false gods.  This book will be useful to pastors, Sunday Schools teachers, and laymen who want to dig deeper into the word of God.
